Learn about the History of Living Nativity Scenes

The staging of the very first Living Nativity Scenes inside Postojna Cave in 1989 was a bold and revolutionary move, the first to bring the nativity scene out of sacred buildings during the era of democratisation. Based on the concept of tableau vivant, Gregor Tozon staged a Christmas story with twelve performers underneath a speleothem (a cave formation), which reminded him of a nativity stable.

Today, more than three decades later, Postojna Cave’s Living Nativity Scenes are synonymous with the world’s most beautiful nativity re-enactment and Slovenia’s biggest festive season spectacle. The Christmas story, staged along a 5-km-long cave tour trail, with more than 100 performers and international singing stars, is viewed partly on foot and partly during a ride on the iconic cave train.
