In the Postojna Cave Park, which boasts two Slovenia’s most-visited tourist attractions, Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, sustainability is more than merely something that’s currently fashionable; it’s the highest ideal that we have been striving for since 2010, when Marjan Batagelj and Katja Dolenc Batagelj took over the management of the company. Following clear guidelines set out at the beginning and environmental protection approaches, which also convinced the European Parliament’s Natura 2000 panel of judges, it is now time to achieve the goals pursued as part of the Predjama Sustainable project.

THE PROTECT PROTEUS PROJECT, one of the largest sustainability projects in Slovenia, has just been launched. This is a project aimed at ensuring the best possible living environment for the baby olms, also known as the ‘baby dragons’ from Postojna Cave, and raising public awareness about the importance of this protected and little-known animal species. Their reproduction process in nature had never been witnessed before, which made their hatching in the Postojna Cave aquarium all the more interesting. The olms are scientifically known as Proteus anguinus and are endemic to Slovenia and the Dinaric Karst.

Yesterday, Slovenia’s biggest Christmas and New Year’s spectacle premiered in Postojna Cave. The Living Nativity Scenes, which are staged inside Postojna Cave from 25 to 30 December and are an awe-inspiring combination of natural grandeur and a mysterious Christmas story, have wowed the spectators like never before.

A New Brood of Baby Olms in 2022
In the largest Slovenian tourist attraction, Postojna Cave – nicknamed "the world's most famous dragon nest" by the global media following a story that attracted a lot of media attention in 2016 – one of the female olms laid new eggs this summer. Their development has been very successful and we are expecting the last two baby olms to hatch in the coming days! We are about to witness an unprecedented reproductive success rate in the world of olms!

After the longest temporary closure in Postojna Cave’s entire history, which lasted no fewer than 231 days, we are very pleased to share some good news: the queen of the subterranean world and most of the Postojna Cave Park attractions are reopening. After Slovenia was the first country in the EU to declare an end to the COVID-19 epidemic, we reopened Postojna Cave. And earlier today, June 11th,we revealed to the public for the first time our most carefully guarded cave inhabitants. Four years after they hatched and caused quite a furore, we are proud to present three of the twenty-one baby olms (Proteus anguinus), the world-famous ‘dragon's offspring’, which we have all – and the media all over the world too – kept a close eye on since 2016. They have become veritable ‘celebrities’ and now it's time for the public to meet them as well.
